Last year, at the recommendation of my Boss, I purchased and read the book; My Vision written by the ruler of Dubai, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum .
The “intro” of the book was fascinating.
The intro read;
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you’d better be running
If you are a true African, by now you should know that that intro is not only applicable to animals in Africa but also humans.
Every morning in Africa, young men like myself wake knowing they must grind and hustle or risk living below two Dollars that day (That’s the benchmark for poverty in Africa).
Every morning in Africa, Pastors wake up knowing they must come up with mouth-watering sermons or risk losing tithes and offerings the next service day.
Every morning in Africa, Politicians wake up knowing they must rekindle the fire and compensate the men that brought them into power or risk losing their sits come the next election.
Every morning in Africa, brick layers wake up, knowing they must lay as many bricks as possible or risk not being able to bring food to their families that day.
Every morning in Africa, truck pushers wake up, knowing they must push and cart as many goods as possible or risk being able to pay at the most affordable “buka” on the street.
Every morning in Africa, “Agberos” wake up knowing they must load as many commuter buses as they possibly can or risk being able to savor the delicious taste of Bread and “Ewa” (Beans in Yoruba) that day.
Every morning in Africa, even beggars wake up knowing they must appeal to your pity or risk staying on empty stomachs that day.
That is how it is in Africa.
In Africa, whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle or the regular corporate “suit and tie” hustler or a Pastor or a Politician or even a beggar, when the morning comes, you’d better be running.
