A little intro before we proceed.
USP is the acronym for Unique Selling Proposition.
Entrepreneur.com defines it as “The factor or consideration presented by a seller as the reason that one product or service is different from and better than that of the competition “.
I understand stuff like this sound like jargon for Corporate Executives and MBA guys but it does not have to be.
Like it or not, these concepts affect You in many ways and the fact that You have never heard about the Newton’s Law of Gravity does not mean You will not fall down if You jump up (Well, except You travelled with Elon Musk’s Falcon Heavy earlier in the month).
Let us break things down.
USP in a layman’s language simply mean those attributes that are Unique to You and You alone. We are all valuable at some point or the other. Even if You chose to look down on yourself, it does not diminish your Value.
With that said, in the midst of many valuable people what makes You the candidate of choice?; What makes You unique?
You can get a better understanding by answering the following questions;
- What do You know that others in the room do not know?
- What can You do that others in your department or unit cannot do?
- What additional value can You offer that others cannot.
A little caution on this.
Sometimes ago, I always had this idea at the back of my mind that where ever I go, I am the most intelligent person there. If I enter a room, deep down within me, I believe I am the best person in the room. However, I have come to understand that was Arrogance spiced with Ignorance.
You might not always be the best person in the room or the most intelligent person around BUT there are stuffs You know and can do that no other person can. That is your USP and it defines your space.
Your goal is to be well aware of your USPs , identify your space and Man it with style and swag.
