How to use AI to improve your Learning

Artificial Intelligence can act as an imperfect expert across various subjects, offering explanations and insights that can inspire further research and understanding.

It provides multiple perspectives on a topic, promoting critical analysis and deeper learning. However, it’s important to remain cautious as AI can sometimes produce inaccurate or fabricated information, known as “hallucinations.” Always critically evaluate the AI’s output and question its responses.

Here are some effective ways to utilize large language models (LLMs) for learning about any topic:

1. Get Curated Resource Recommendations:

Use an LLM to accelerate your learning by recommending the best books, articles, blogs, and other resources.

“Recommend the best books, articles, blogs, and other resources for learning more about [topic].”

2. Explore Related Topics:

Ask the LLM to suggest related topics and concepts to gain a broader understanding and see the bigger picture.

“List some related topics to [subject] that I should explore to gain a broader understanding. Describe how they are connected.”

3. Develop a Structured Learning Plan:

Request a step-by-step guide from the LLM to systematically develop a new skill, including tips, exercises, and recommended resources.

“Provide a step-by-step guide on how to learn [skill] as a beginner. Include tips, exercises, and recommended resources.”

4. Simplify Complex Concepts:

Have the LLM explain complex concepts in simple terms and engage in dialogue to clarify any confusing points.

“Let’s discuss [topic] and you can ask me questions to help me explore it further. We’ll work together to build a deep understanding, and you’ll provide feedback to identify any misconceptions or gaps in my knowledge.”

5. Generate and Walk Through Examples:

Use the LLM to create an example problem and provide a detailed, step-by-step solution.

“The problem I am struggling with is [insert specific problem type here]. I am having difficulty with [insert specific aspects or concepts you are struggling with].”

– Generate an Example: Create a clear and concise example problem related to the specific type of problem mentioned.

– Step-by-Step Solution: Provide a detailed walkthrough of the solution, including background information, formulas, and concepts. Highlight key points or common pitfalls.

6. Summarize Key Papers and Resources:

Ask the LLM to concisely summarize complex materials to break down the information into more digestible parts.

“Summarize the key points and main ideas of [book/article/presentation] on [topic].”

7. Answer Specific Questions:

Use the LLM to answer specific questions and identify gaps in your knowledge.

“Create a series of questions that will test my knowledge of [topic]. Identify gaps in my answers and provide better explanations.”

The key to effective learning with an LLM is to engage in a back-and-forth dialogue, asking it to explain, summarize, recommend, and test your knowledge. Leveraging the LLM’s vast knowledge and capabilities can help you rapidly expand your understanding of any topic.
