My mum takes a huge credit for pre-installing me with great stories from the Bible most of which have provided me with great principles applicable both in my personal life and in business.
One of those great stories is what I call the Solomon’s Divider Principle (SDP).
For the sake of my friends whose mum’s probably forgot to teach them this story let me summarize it.It was the story of two young ladies who lived in the same house and coincidentally, it happened that they both had infant sons. One Night while they were asleep, one of them (who probably was a certified sleeper) “accidentally” smothered her son killing the young lad. They next smart thing for her to do after waking up was to exchange her dead child with that of her neighbor.
Cut the long story short, the matter was taken to the King’s palace. And the wise king Solomon in his verdict called for a sword to be brought before him. He declared that there was only one fair solution: the live son must be split in two, each woman receiving half of the child. Upon hearing this terrible verdict, the boy’s true mother cried out, “Oh Lord, give the baby to her, just don’t kill him!” The liar, in her bitter jealousy, exclaimed, “It shall be neither mine nor yours—divide it!”.
Now lets bring it home, what is the morale of the story?
The true mother of the living child preferred to keep the child ALIVE by giving him to the other woman (WIN-WIN) while the one who had already killed (LOST) her own child was excited about the verdict (LOSE-LOSE).
To bring this down further to our personal lives and business, any friend, business associate or employee you have that is only concerned about “let us share this thing”, “let us scatter everything”,”let the profit be divided amongst everybody”….etc, that is always excited about instant and immediate gratification without any consideration for posterity is “an accident going somewhere to happen”.
The earlier you get rid or run away from them, the better for the both of you.
And like my Boss will say; “You dont put the T.Shirt group in the decision making of an organization”
Let me close by challenging you to employ the Solomon’s Divider Principle (SDP) as a litmus test for people you should bring close or stay farther from and the results will surprise you.
